One Direction is Number One!

By American music awards, Backstreet Boys, Beatles, big time rush, Chris Kirkpatrick, Donnie Wahlberg, Five Seconds of Summer, Heffron Drive, Jackson Five, justin timberlake, kendall Schmidt, mark wahlberg, michael jackson, NKOTB, NSYNC, one direction, Simon Cowell, The Mickey Mouse Club,

Ride of Fame recently inducted Kendall Schmidt as an IT honoree. He is a Big Time Rush alum and is now a lead singer in the band Heffron Drive. As I interviewed him about his band and watched him interact with his fans, I was astonished at how authentically nice he is. The more I thought about it, I realized that it’s actually a pretty hard job to be part of a boy band. I mean, girls crying when they see you, not letting go when they hug you and fainting as you walk by.

So as a shout out for putting up with teenage girls, and girls in their twenties… and thirties, and moms too… I’m taking a look at the best boy bands!

Now, first we have to establish what a boy band is. If you take it literally, it could be any band of boys. But I thought I should do some more research so that I could write a more educated post. Here is what I came up with!

The term “boy band” was first coined in 1985 and according to Google it is “a pop group composed of attractive young men whose music and image are designed to appeal primarily to a young teenage audience.”

So then, do I include the Beatles? What about Five Seconds of Summer? I started to panic thinking about all of the amazing groups with “attractive young men.” But then I realized that the key word here is “pop.”

With a new-found understanding of what a boy band really is, I give you:

The Top Five Boy Bands of all time.

#5. New Kids On The Block

Right as the term “boy band” surfaced, so did New Kids On The Block. They released their debut album in 1986 and won two American Music Awards by 1990. Also, although Marky Mark left the band before recording began, the band did begin with the Wahlberg brothers. Donnie, who I am personally a huge fan of, was the first to be discovered. He played a huge role in choosing the rest of the band members.

With over 80 million records sold worldwide, there was no way these guys weren’t making the top five. What’s even more impressive about these guys, is that after thirty years, they’re still going strong.

#4. Jackson Five

Their first single, “I Want You Back,” marked the beginning of Jacksonmania. The Jackson Five had 17 singles in the top forty on the Hot 100. They were also the first group to have their first four singles reach the top of the charts.

Michael Jackson was the clear star of the group and catapulted the group into fame! If you ever have a spare moment, go back and watch some of their early hits and witness how the “King of Pop” was born.

#3. *NSYNC

What’s crazy to me is that this iconic group was formed because Chris Kirkpatrick missed the cut for the Backstreet Boys. He approached the manager of the Backstreet Boys and asked him if he could form a second group. The answer was obviously “yes.” As their manager was looking through tapes that he had, a certain Justin Timberlake from The Mickey Mouse Club caught his eye.

If witnessing the transformation of Justin’s hair isn’t enough for you to watch their videos, their five VMA wins should convince you! Not only that, but they won awards at the AMAs, People’s Choice Awards and Billboard Music Awards.

#2. Backstreet Boys

Not only are they the best-selling boy band in history, but they sing my favorite karaoke song! Who doesn’t love singing their heart out to “I Want it That Way?!” What’s interesting to me is that when the band first debuted in 1995, they were an enormous hit in Europe, but barely a blip on the charts in the U.S.

They finished their debut album in 1996 and released it worldwide, excluding the U.S. and Canada. Before they debuted in the States, they had reached platinum status in Germany and released two international albums. Finally, in August of 1997, they had their U.S. album debut. They went on to receive the World Music Award for Best Selling Pop Group two years in a row!

And the rest is history.

#1. One Direction

Not only does this band have an amazing start-up story (thank you, Simon Cowell), but it’s nigh impossible for ANYONE not to love one of their songs! I used to claim that I didn’t like One Direction at all. Then, my niece got their new album for Christmas last year, and I made her play “Night Changes” on repeat. Eventually, I let her play the whole CD. Now I listen to them all the time!

I know 1D hasn’t been around nearly as long as any of these other bands, but that’s just it! They’ve accomplished so much more in just a short amount of time.

They have won awards all over Europe, North and South America, and Asia. This includes winning seven awards at the AMAs and nineteen Teen Choice Awards out of nineteen nominations. Now, you may be thinking,”Who cares about the Teen Choice Awards?” But remember that definition I found: “designed to appeal primarily to a young teenage audience.” One Direction has done that better than anyone!

They are the first band to have their first four albums debut at number one in Billboard 200 history. Their album in 2013 sold more copies that year than any other album, even though it was released in November. Their 2014 tour was the highest grossing tour by a vocal group EVER! You may not agree with my choice, but you can’t dispute the facts!

One Direction is Number One.
