With the Rio Olympics starting August 5th, the question on everyone’s mind is, What country will win the most gold medals? With 41 sports, it is anyone’s game! Here are our picks for which countries are in the running!

United States

It is a natural choice that the United States could win the most Gold! Team USA was the top country to win gold in the last 2012 Olympics in London. The two sports the United States will definitely win Gold in are Swimming and Gymnastics. Superstar swimmers Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Missy Franklin all will return this Olympics. No one will forget that recording breaking moment when Michael Phelps took home eight gold medals in Beijing.

For Gymnastics, on the team is World Champion Simone Biles and Gabby Douglas who won gold at the last Olympics. With these two and many more star gymnasts, there no doubt Team USA will sweep in Gymnastics. Other notable USA athletes include Carmelo Anthony (Basketball), Kevin Durant (Basketball), Tina Charles (Basketball), Allyson Felix (Sprinter), Carli Lloyd (Soccer), Kerri Walsh-Jennings (Beach Volleyball), and Venus and Serena Williams (Tennis).

China

I chose China as a gold competitor as they are MAJOR competition for the United States. For example in Women’s Swimming, Shiwen Ye won two gold medals in the last Summer Olympics. Also in Gymnastics, you have Kai Zou who competed in the London and Beijing Summer Olympics and has won 5 gold medals! The sport China has always dominated in is table tennis. With the singles team line up for Rio, China is a shoe-in for gold!

Great Britain

Great Britain has many promising athletes who can bring Team UK to #1! In Track Cycling, Laura Trott is must watch having won 7 World Championship golds, 10 European Championship wins and two gold medals at London 2012 Olympics.

Mo Farah is known for his amazing performance in London being the first Briton to win both the 5,000m and 10,000m in Athletics! For Windsurfing, Nick Dempsey has yet to win a gold but having won a Bronze in Athens and a Silver in London, he is bound to win gold in Rio! Other promising Briton Athletes include Jazz Carlin (Swimming) and Liam Phillips (Cycling BMX).

South Korea

South Korea definitely has a chance to claim the top gold medals position. It has been in the top 10 gold medal list since the 2004 Summer Olympics. In the last Summer Olympics, they took home 38 gold medals! Of course, South Korea is expected to do well in Taekwondo since it is a Korean Martial Art. Taekwondo star Lee Dae-hoon is a definite to win gold!

Also, South Korea stands a great chance in Archery as London 2012 Gold Medalist Ki Bo Bae returns! The Archery team dominated at the test event in Rio this past September.

Of course, there are many other countries in contention for gold medals. Are you going to be watching the Rio Olympics? I hope so!
